The victorious Emperor Constantine’s embrace of the Christian faith and his support for the Christian Church launched one of the most far-reaching and controversial social innovations in the history of the world. The Emperor Theodosius consolidated this innovation by establishing Christianity as the official religion of the Roman Empire, but later generations would disagree on the desirability of this change.  Greek Orthodox Christians interpret the Bible as supporting this innovation and honor Constantine as a saint in heaven, but Dante described Constantine’s place in hell (Inferno 19.115-17), and many Protestant Reformers from the sixteenth century to the present have interpreted the Bible as condemning every project of Christian Empire as a fundamental betrayal of Christian faith.

This fist general EDPOP conference aims to bring together European specialists in the fieldof popular print. Although popular print culture has been studied intensively since the 1960’s, this was done mainly with a regional or national focus, based on the assumption that popular print in the vernacular had a limited geographical reach. Recent research has revealed however, that popular print culture had strong European characteristics and an often transnational infrastructure. In order to answer the question how European popular print culture was in the period 1450-1900, we have to discuss diferent starting points, approaches and methodologies.
