Open Weather Radar Data and AI Nowcasting for Italy

How can artificial intelligence and high-performance computing (HPC) transform meteorological and climate data into useful tools for business, research and risk management? The webinar, held in English and organised by IT4LIA AI Factory in collaboration with the Bruno Kessler Foundation (FBK) and EuroCC Italy, will feature presentations by Gabriele Franch and Alessandro Camilletti from FBK.

AI nowcasting is becoming an essential tool for anticipating severe weather that directly impacts infrastructure, agriculture, logistics, and public safety across Italy. As rainfall events grow more intense and harder to predict with traditional methods, organizations need high-resolution data and predictive models that support fast, informed decision-making.

This webinar presents two open-access resources designed to assist public administrations, enterprises, and research institutions with weather data and models integration in Italy. The session provides an overview of tools that make complex meteorological data and models accessible for operational application, and demonstrates the practical impact they can deliver to your organization.

Agenda

  • 12:00 – 12:10 | Introduction to IT4LIA AI Factory by Gabriele Franch (FBK)
  • 12:10 – 12:30 | Presentation of the IT-DPC-SRI Dataset and the IRENE Model by Alessandro Camilletti (FBK)
  • 12:30 – 12:40 | Talk by Francesco Bracci (3BMeteo)
  • 12:40 – 12:50 | Q&A

What We Will Introduce

During this session, we will present:

  • The IT-DPC-SRI Dataset: A publicly available archive of Italian weather radar precipitation estimates starting from 2010, continuously updated in real time. This cloud-optimized dataset offers a consistent record of rainfall with a 1 km spatial resolution at 5 minutes intervals.
  • The IRENE AI Model: A deep learning model developed for short-range precipitation “nowcasting” over Italy. Moving beyond traditional extrapolation, IRENE leverages artificial intelligence to predict rapid, short-term changes in rainfall and generate reliable probabilistic forecasts.

The session will be led by Alessandro Camilletti, Researcher at FBK.

Target Audience & Applications

This webinar is intended for industry professionals, and public sector officials. We will discuss possible operational applications across key sectors:

  • Public Administration & Civil Protection: Utilizing high-resolution radar data and AI forecasting to support early-warning systems, urban hydrology management, and emergency response planning.
  • Enterprises & Industry: Integrating precipitation data into risk assessment frameworks for insurance, logistics optimization, and resource management in agriculture and critical infrastructure.
  • Research & Innovation: Using this standardized, analysis-ready dataset to train new data-driven meteorological models and advance climate research.

The webinar will feature a presentation by Francesco Bracci from 3BMeteo, who will showcase how these types of products have been integrated into operational workflows and demonstrate the practical impact achieved.

Next Steps

This webinar serves as an introductory session ahead of our upcoming Two-Day Technical Masterclass, where data scientists and engineers will receive practical guidance on implementing the dataset and the IRENE model into existing workflows.

The webinar will be held in English.
