Austrian-Italian collaboration promotes research on smart electronic based systems
The Austrian research center Silicon Austria Labs (SAL) and the Italian research institute Fondazione Bruno Kessler (FBK) are launching a bilateral research collaboration to develop methods and processes that increase the dependability of electronic based systems.

Graz, Sept. 28, 2021 – The Austrian research center Silicon Austria Labs (SAL) and the Italian research institute Fondazione Bruno Kessler (FBK) are launching a bilateral research collaboration to develop methods and processes that increase the dependability of electronic based systems.
“In the Internet of Things (IoT) and digitized industrial production (Industry 4.0), billions of devices are constantly connected. It is therefore essential that the electronic based systems that form their backbone are dependable, i.e. that they run flawlessly, in many cases for years and decades,” explains Ingo Pill, Staff Scientist at SAL in Graz and expert in the fields of artificial intelligence and dependable electronic based systems. “The goal of the research cooperation between SAL and FBK is therefore, among other things, to jointly develop formal approaches for evaluating and ensuring the dependability of intelligent (partially) autonomous systems and concepts for enabling trustworthy artificial intelligence in an embedded system.”
“European technology leadership requires transnational collaboration”
The Digital Industry Center (DICenter) within FBK, based in Trento, focuses on digital technologies in the manufacturing industry, developing applications for critical systems, adaptive and autonomous systems, and in the area of perception, diagnosis and prediction, among others. SAL’s Embedded Systems research area aims to enable the intelligent interaction of electronic based systems with their cyber-physical environment. Within the framework of the cooperation between the two research institutions, strategic research projects, funding applications and cooperation projects with industrial partners will be developed, as well as mutual research stays of scientific staff and scientific events will be organized.
“In order for Europe to be able to position itself as a technology leader in global competition, transnational cooperation between research institutions, universities and companies is required. Not only do we at SAL benefit from bundling our know-how and capacities with those of the renowned research institute FBK, but this cooperation also enriches the European research landscape in the field of electronic based systems to the highest degree”, says Gerald Murauer, Chief Executive Officer at SAL.
“What connects FBK’s DICenter and SAL is the mission to provide solution approaches for the key challenges of the 21st century and thus support industry and society in the digital transformation. The Fondazione Bruno Kessler (FBK), based in Trento (Italy), has 11 research centers with different foci in the fields of technology and innovation as well as humanities and social sciences.
