TOWARDS 5G FOR AIRCRAFT COMMUNICATIONS

    26/03/2018 The EIT Digital Innovation ICARO-EU project addresses a new integrated high capacity direct-air-to ground communications system.

    The FBK CREATE-NET Research Center contributed to the design and implementation of the system prototype. It is a solution that effectively uses LTE and License Assisted Access, or LAA, within an aircraft, shifting on-board communication technology to mobile communications in unlicensed frequency bands. FBK has developed and provided features for on-board traffic management and load balancing between on-board LTE and WiFi networks. We have tested the algorithms at the FBK laboratories in Trento. They effectively discharge LTE traffic over a coexisting WiFi network, thus optimizing the use of network resources.
