at Fondazione Bruno Kessler led by <a href=\"https:\/\/magazine.fbk.eu\/en\/spotlight\/stefano-merler\/\">Stefano Merler<\/a>, has been developing quantitative epidemiology methods to strengthen epidemiological surveillance.<\/p><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fbk.eu\/it\/result\/modelli-per-contrastare-la-diffusione-della-pandemia-covid-19\/\"><strong>Computational epidemiology<\/strong>\u00a0<\/a><strong>:\u00a0<\/strong>the Health Emergencies center aims to develop basic epidemiological research to increase knowledge of the main factors that regulate the transmission of infectious diseases, developing methods \u2013 mainly based on mathematical and computational modeling \u2013 to provide information to decision makers in order to improve preparedness, prevention and response to health emergencies caused by communicable diseases.<\/p><p>Among the main projects and collaborations are:<\/p><ul><li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fbk.eu\/it\/result\/modelli-predittivi-per-contrastare-la-diffusione-della-pandemia-covid-19\/\">Studies to contain the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic<\/a>.<\/strong> Scientific advice for the government and regional task forces (Lombardy and Trentino) to face the Coronavirus emergency through the use of mathematical models on transmissibility.<\/li><li><strong>Studies on influenza transmission and mitigation.Scientific advice for the Government Task Force during the 2009 A\/H1N1 pandemic.<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>Studies on the transmission and containment of the <a href=\"https:\/\/magazine.fbk.eu\/it\/search\/ebola\/\">Ebola virus<\/a>.<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>Studies on the transmission of vector-borne diseases, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/magazine.fbk.eu\/it\/search\/zika\/\">Zika<\/a>, Dengue and Chikungunya.<\/strong><\/li><li>Among his main collaborations, the one with the<strong> Istituto Superiore di Sanit\u00e0 through the joint EPIQ laboratory<\/strong> for the quantitative study of the spread of infectious diseases and the Joint Research Unit FBK-FEM EPILAB which combines skills in quantitative epidemiology (FBK) and laboratory and field research (FEM).<\/li><\/ul><p><strong>Projects in the context of NRRP<\/strong><\/p><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fbk.eu\/en\/extended-partnerships\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>INF-ACT Foundation<\/strong><\/a><br \/>The <a href=\"http:\/\/inf-act.it\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>INF-ACT<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0project will combine research excellence and application of its findings in real cases to\u00a0<strong>i)<\/strong>\u00a0fill gaps in knowledge of the biological characteristics of highly disseminated pathogens,\u00a0<strong>ii)<\/strong>\u00a0create a framework and infrastructure for centralized systematic monitoring of the evolution of multiple pathogens with epidemic potential circulating in humans, in animals and the environment,\u00a0<strong>iii)<\/strong>\u00a0study the circulation of pathogenic microorganisms at the human-animal interface and the risk of spill-over events,\u00a0<strong>iv)<\/strong>\u00a0define shared protocols for the implementation of monitoring and containment measures through the application of innovative tools,\u00a0<strong>v)<\/strong>\u00a0create a network and infrastructure for centralized systematic monitoring of clinical markers.<br \/><strong>FBK<\/strong>, with its \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/he.fbk.eu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Health Emergencies Center\u201d<\/a>, which provides support to the Ministry of Health and the Istituto Superiore di Sanit\u00e0 with\u00a0<strong>quantitative epidemiology<\/strong>, is\u00a0<strong>co-leader of Spoke 4 on \u201cEpidemiology, monitoring and modelling (EPI-MOD)\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0and also participates in Spoke 2 activities.<\/p><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fbk.eu\/en\/national-centers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>ICSC Foundation<\/strong><\/a><br \/>The\u00a0<strong>Supercomputing Cente<\/strong>r is\u00a0one of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/researchitaly.mur.gov.it\/en\/2022\/07\/11\/the-five-national-research-centres-envisaged-by-the-nrrp-presented\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">five national research centers under the\u00a0National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR)\u00a0<\/a>.Advanced by the National Institute of Nuclear Physics (<a href=\"https:\/\/home.infn.it\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">INFN<\/a>), the new entity can count on\u00a0<strong>51 founding members<\/strong>, distributed throughout the national territory, from the public and private scientific research and industry sectors.<\/p><p>Dedicated to\u00a0<strong>high-performance computing (HPC<\/strong>),<strong>\u00a0big data<\/strong>\u00a0management and\u00a0<strong>quantum computing<\/strong>, the National Supercomputing Center will be based at the Tecnopolo Bologna tech hub: a citadel of innovation promoted by the Emilia-Romagna Region, thanks in part to investments by the Italian government and the EU, which already houses the European Weather Data Center (<a href=\"https:\/\/researchitaly.mur.gov.it\/en\/2022\/05\/04\/strategic-infrastructures-big-data-hub-and-ecmwf-new-data-centre-in-bologna\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ECMWF<\/a>) and will soon host the\u00a0<strong>Leonardo\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0supercomputer\u00a0managed by CINECA and the INFN Computing Center, with the aim of building\u00a0a distributed, cross-domain infrastructure\u00a0that will provide scientific the research and manufacturing sector with support for the innovation and digitization of the country.<br \/><strong>FBK<\/strong>, a founding member of the HPC Center, is involved in\u00a0<strong>3 Spokes<\/strong>:<\/p><ul><li>co-leader in the Spoke\u00a0<strong>\u201cDigital Society &amp; Smart Cities\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0with the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/digis.fbk.eu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Digital Society Center<\/a>;<\/li><li>affiliated in the Spoke\u00a0<strong>\u201cInsilico Medicine &amp; Omics Data\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0with the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/digitalhealthcenter-en.fbk.eu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Digital Health &amp; Wellbeing Center<\/a>;<\/li><li>affiliated with the Spoke<strong>\u00a0\u201cEarth &amp; Climate\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0with the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/dicenter.fbk.eu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Digital Industry Center<\/a>.<\/li><\/ul><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fbk.eu\/en\/innovation-ecosystems\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>iNEST Ecosystem<\/strong><\/a><br \/>The priority line of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fbk.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/INEST_22_06_28-Scheda_ecosistema_NordEst_PNRR_MUR.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">iNEST\u00a0ecosystem<\/a>\u00a0falls under the\u00a0\u201c<strong>Digital, Industry, Aerospace<\/strong>\u201d\u00a0area of the National Research Plan (NRP)<\/p><p>iNEST is coordinated by the University of Padua and aims to extend the benefits of digital technologies to the main areas of specialization in the Northeast (Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Veneto and the Autonomous Provinces of Trento and Bolzano): to the industrial-manufacturing, agriculture, sea, mountain, construction, tourism, culture, health and food sectors. This virtuous model is available, as a scalable and replicable model, for other territories that might want to experiment with it. The Head of the Center for Digital Health and Wellbeing is <a href=\"https:\/\/magazine.fbk.eu\/it\/spotlight\/stefano-forti\/\">Stefano Forti<\/a>.<\/p><p>Main technologies in this area:<\/p><ul><li><strong>Digital Medicine platforms<\/strong>: telehealth systems, telemedicine, digital medical records with multi-device access.<\/li><li><strong>Virtual Reality:<\/strong>\u00a0the research activity in this area will allow to design, test and validate the use of Virtual Reality for the management of stressful situations, to support senior citizens with mild dementia, to manage anxiety through immersion in relaxing environments and to accompany cancer patients as they prepare for chemotherapy sessions.<\/li><li><strong>Virtual Coaching<\/strong>\u00a0(persuasive technology): FBK is conducting research in the field of virtual coaching systems to support citizens in maintaining and improving their health conditions. The approach is to provide citizens with a persuasive virtual partner who operates in a similar way to a human coach helping them achieve their health goals.<\/li><li><strong>Data Science<\/strong>\u00a0for Health: it is an emerging discipline that integrates aspects of life sciences, mathematics, statistics and computer science. In our vision, the management, analysis and integration of large amounts of clinical and health data are key factors in addressing crucial challenges for improving the quality of public health.<\/li><li><strong>Technologies for human language processing<\/strong>: with applications both within documents and in medical and biomedical domains.<\/li><li><strong>Technologies for \u201c<em>conversational agents<\/em>\u201c:<\/strong>\u00a0AI-based conversational agents, commonly referred to as\u00a0<strong>chatbots,<\/strong>\u00a0are increasingly widespread and, for some time now, have also made it into Healthcare. FBK chatbots are not just based on an ecosystem of rules and decision trees but are built on\u00a0<strong>Natural Language Processing<\/strong>\u00a0platforms that exploit AI, Machine Learning and Deep Learning skills.<\/li><\/ul><p><strong>An example of the main projects:<\/strong><\/p><ul><li><strong>Virtual coaching for Digital Therapeutics:\u00a0<\/strong>digital therapeutics is the technology that offers therapeutic interventions guided by high quality software programs. These programs are based on scientific evidence obtained through rigorous and confirmatory clinical trials with the aim of preventing, managing or treating a broad spectrum of physical, mental and behavioral conditions. These are treatment interventions capable of improving clinical outcomes on a par with pharmacological treatment. They can take the form of apps, video games, websites, or wearable devices.<\/li><li><strong>AI in Health<\/strong>: data driven predictive models for precision medicine. The Center Units, in collaboration with national and international institutes and hospitals, create complete analysis environments, from the pre-processing of data to the implementation of the models and their application on cloud computing structures also equipped with GPUs.<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/trec.trentinosalute.net\/\"><strong>TreC +<\/strong><\/a><strong>:\u00a0<\/strong>app and online portal (<a href=\"https:\/\/trec.trentinosalute.net\">trec.trentinosalute.net<\/a>) that allow citizens residing or domiciled in the Autonomous Provinceof Trento to have a single point of access to the health services of the APSS.
