Digital technologies for agriculture<\/strong> represent an application domain of primary interest for Italy and for FBK’s research.<\/p>

Italy is facing the challenge of a more efficient agriculture, capable of improving product quality and value while enhancing environmental sustainability and making the most of local area identities.<\/p>

The application of Artificial Intelligence to environmental<\/strong> and climatic data<\/strong>, collected automatically in the field by machines, together with business process data<\/strong> allow the development of solutions that can foster efficiency and productivity, improving yield and sustainability of agricultural practices<\/strong>.<\/p>

Strengths of the FBK model<\/span><\/h2>

The decades of experience of FBK, and in particular of its Center for Digital Industry<\/a>, and its network of local, national and international partners configure an innovation ecosystem that is ideal for testing possible applications of AI in agriculture<\/strong>: from scientific research to technology transfer on sensors, remote sensing, IoT platforms and machine learning applications.<\/p>

Through long-term collaborations with leading companies in the field, new high-quality, low-cost Data Science and Deep Learning tools<\/strong>, IoT platforms and connected devices have been developed that can monitor the life cycle of crops and optimize their management.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t

Italy, and FBK in particular, is coordinating the European AgrifoodTEF project<\/a><\/strong> to develop testing and experimentation infrastructures for new products and services based on Artificial Intelligence and Robotics, in support of European agrifood.<\/p>

Having won a call for proposals launched in 2022 by the European Commission (part of the Digital Europe program), the AgrifoodTEF project has a total budget of 60 million euros and a time horizon of five years<\/strong>. The winning consortium is composed of some of Europe’s leading players in the field of digital innovation applied to agrifood production.
\u00a0 Organized into three national nodes (Italy, Germany, France) and four satellite nodes (Poland, Belgium, Sweden and Austria)<\/strong>, it offers its services to companies and developers from all over Europe who want to validate their innovative solutions under real-life conditions, accelerating their transition to the market.<\/p>

In addition to its coordinator, FBK, the Italian node includes national institutes of excellence such as the University of Naples Federico II – coordinator of the National Agritech Center – the Polytechnic University of Milan and the University of Milan, the Edmund Mach Foundation, a center of excellence in agronomic research and innovation, and Trust-IT<\/strong>, a company specializing in digital marketing, which is in charge of project communication and dissemination.<\/p>

The European nodes of this important network include Italy, coordinated by FBK, France, coordinated by Laboratoire National de M\u00e9trologie et d’essais (LNE), the Netherlands with the involvement of Wageningen University and Research (WUR), Belgium with the contribution of Flanders Research Institute for Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (ILVO), Sweden coordinated by Research Institutes of Sweden (RISE), Poland led by Lukasiewicz Institute (L-PIT), Austria coordinated by Josephinum Research (JR), Spain coordinated by University of Lleida (UdL), and Denmark with Danish Technological Institute (DTI).<\/strong><\/p>

AgrifoodTEF is funded 50 percent by the European Commission and the remaining 50 percent by the governments of the states participating in the consortium -the Ministry of Enterprise and Made in Italy, for the Italian side.<\/p>

The project aims to provide testing and experimentation services to companies that have developed an AI or robotics solution for the agribusiness sector to validate their solution.

\"AGRIDATA\"<\/a><\/span><\/p>

The AgriDataSpace<\/b><\/a> project (a Coordination and Support Action of the Digital Europe call for proposals) aims to coordinate activities and actions preparatory and preliminary to the creation of a <\/span>European Data Space for agriculture.<\/b><\/p>

The project, coordinated by the French <\/span>Agdatahub<\/b>, aims to lay the groundwork for the creation of systems that facilitate the exchange, processing and analysis of data in a way that is secure, reliable, transparent and respectful of the sovereignty of these data. The expected results are guidelines for the implementation of those enabling systems that, through shrewd and participatory management of collected data, will create new opportunities for <\/span>monitoring and optimizing resource use in agriculture<\/b>, stimulating innovation actions that support the digitization of the sector.<\/span><\/p>

The role of <\/span>Fondazione Bruno Kessler<\/b> in the project is to coordinate activities dedicated to the <\/span>development of reference architectures<\/b> that include the use of the latest technologies created to promote a new <\/span>data economy<\/b> in agriculture<\/b> that is rooted in the existence of shared data spaces and the possibilities of exploitation of data collected in various production contexts of the agriculture industry. An important and characterizing aspect in this context is the respect for the principle of data sovereignty according to the principles also promoted by <\/span>GAIA-X<\/b><\/a>, of which <\/span>FBK<\/b> is one of the <\/span>founding members<\/b> at the national level.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

The AGRICLIMA<\/strong> project aims to create an innovative technological platform for analyzing the impacts of climate change on agriculture and developing tools for risk mitigation. From a technological innovation perspective, the platform will offer tools to facilitate the collection, cataloging, and simplified access to a significant set of public and private datasets. Following the principles of creating an ‘EU Data Space,’ it will enable the secure management and exchange of public and private data, respecting data sovereignty. From an application standpoint, it will integrate a set of relevant datasets and data processing models that will allow the study and understanding of relationships between some of the main phenomena influencing agricultural productivity and risk management, such as climate, crop phenology, and hydrological dynamics.<\/p>

\"LOGOIRRITRE<\/strong> is a territorial information system for Trentino Province designed to promote and facilitate efficient irrigation management through precision irrigation practices.<\/span><\/p>
