The neurosciences between clinical medicine and research

The human brain, with its wealth of knowledge and experience, by constantly interacting with the physical and social environment, drives behavior, individual and collective choices, creates increasingly sophisticated means of communication and interaction, which provide direction to lines of development, political , economic and industrial choices.

More than 50% of disability in our communities is related to some form of brain disease, and treatment direct and indirect costs are huge.

For these reasons, the study of the “neurosciences” arouses deep interest worldwide among experts and the public, and has huge economic implications as far as diagnosis, treatment, and neurological rehabilitation are concerned. Neuroscience is based on the close cooperation of heterogeneous but complementary disciplines ranging, among the basic sciences, from molecular biology to physiology, neurobiology, behavioral science and psychology, as well as physics, mathematics, engineering and computer science. The approaches and results of basic sciences, in turn, spill over clinical medicine disciplines. This integration process has created important developments in recent years with the emergence of new disciplines such as computational neuroscience, neuroinformatics, neuroengineering, neurotechnology, neurorobotics and applied nanotechnologies.

Evidence of this is provided by the development of large international projects such as the “Human Connectome Project” and “Human Brain Project” funded by the European Commission, which aim to achieve a simulation of the complete human brain functioning to better understand human brain disorders.

The “neurosciences” thus represent a rapidly growing field with very interesting clinical prospects not only for the diagnosis and treatment of diseases but also for the health and well-being of individuals and the community. The coexistence in Trentino, and in particular in the city of Rovereto, of research institutions such as the Center for Mind/Brain Sciences- CIMeC, the Department of Psychology and Cognitive Science, the Mechatronics Hub, and the availability, at the Santa Maria del Carmine Hospital, of diagnostic and therapeutic functions for neurological diseases, with advanced neurorehabilitative approaches, offer a unique opportunity for development in this discipline in our Province in the coming years.
