    The 57th Annual Conference of the Association for Computational Linguistics (ACL) takes place at the Fortezza da Basso in Florence July 28 through August 2, 2019.

    This year’s edition is the first to take place in Italy and is organized by the University of Pisa, Fondazione Bruno Kessler, the “A. Zampolli” Institute of Computational Linguistics – CNR, Pisa.

    The ACL is the most important international scientific association for computational linguistics, a discipline that – halfway between linguistics, artificial intelligence and cognitive sciences – studies how to enable computers to understand and use natural language like human beings.

    Today more than ever it is part of our everyday life. In reality, however, computational linguistics is also an extraordinary journey to understand how language works, how we learn it and how we use it to communicate. A journey that has important practical and social implications, which make it possible to increase access to IT tools and improve the management and analysis of textual information, which still represents the majority of digital data.

    The annual ACL conference is the moment in which scientists from all over the world exchange views to take stock of the state of the art of this discipline and its future prospects.
    The program includes 660 presentations, 6 parallel sessions, 21 workshops and satellite conferences for more than 3200 members in total. Among the topics addressed during the conference there are conversational agents, automatic translation, the use of “deep learning” methods, but also ethical aspects related to language technologies, technologies to fight the use of improper and offensive language on social media, and to manage doctor-patient conversations.
