THE SCIENTIST NICOLA CABIBBO IN TRENTO

08/06/2009 - 20:10

The event will be held on Monday, June 8th on the occasion of the undersigning of the charter of understanding between CNR – the National Research Council and Fondazione  Bruno Kessler

(v.l.) Nicola Cabibbo, the physicist most often quoted in scientific journals throughout the world, will be in Trento on Monday June 8 on the occasion of the undersigning of the charter of understanding between CNR – the National Research Council and Fondazione Bruno Kessler.
Author of important scientific results – such as the introduction of the so-called “Cabibbo’s angle” in the study of elementary particles – that have made him one of the greatest stars of international physics, the Italian scientist will speak about “The power and the role of science”, introduced at 3.00 p.m. in the Sala Conferenze of FBK (in via Sommarive in Povo) by the FBK president Andrea Zanotti.
The event, open to the public, shall then proceed with interventions by Luciano Maiani, president of the National Research Council (CNR) and by the president of the Autonomous Province of Trento.
At 4.15 p.m. the ceremony will proceed with the inauguration of the new joint CNR-FBK laboratories located in Via alla Cascata 56 in Povo, and with the signature of the charter of understanding between Fondazione Bruno Kessler and the National Research Council.
The charter envisages the implementation of research programmes and projects of mutual interest between the national organization and the federation aimed at promoting new scientific and technological developments in the following fields: photonics, bio-physics, micro-systems, innovative materials, nano- and micro-technologies,  nano-science, collaborative systems for terminology mediation, human language and multimodal communication technologies, software designed for the services and the management of distributed processes, and Ambient assisted living.
The cooperation, lasting five years, shall be launched via the creation of a Strategy Committee and of a Technical and Scientific Committee.

In the past he has held prominent positions, such as that of President of INFN, the National Institute of Nuclear Physics and of Enea, the Italian National Agency for New Technologies, Energy and the Environment, and since 1993 he has been President of the Pontifical Academy of Sciences.
He teaches particle physics at the Enrico Fermi institute of the “La Sapienza” University of Rome and is the author of scientific discoveries such as the so-called "Cabibbo angle", a parameter that allows to understand the function of the weak interactions among particles and that has made him one of the most quoted physicists in scientific journals throughout the world.

The lecture will be followed by a speech by the CNR President, Prof. Luciano Maiani

Followed by the closing speech and conclusions of the President
of the Autonomous Province of Trento, Lorenzo Dellai
