(v.l.) Positive results for the “First Summer School of ICT”, the information technology school organized in Maputo, Mozambique by the Trento-based Bruno Kessler Foundation (Fondazione Bruno Kessler) in collaboration with the University of Trento, GPI SpA, Maputo Living Lab and sponsored by the Autonomous Province of Trento.
Classes were held at the Center for Ict Development in Maputo, for a period of four weeks during November 2011, and in December, 24 Mozambican students, coming from the city’s universities, received their diplomas.
Together with researchers from the Bruno Kessler Foundation Aaron Ciaghi, Komminist Weldemariam and Pietro Molini, Maurizio Marchese –from the University of Trento- and GPI’s Tefo James, participants dealt with topics relevant to the management of software projects and web and mobile applications for the development of IT solutions for health related issues in Mozambique.
The project was designed by Adolfo Villafiorita, Head of the ICT4G unit at FBK’s Center for Information Technology (Centro Information Technology) (research group active in the field of IT systems aiming at improving the quality of life) and by Marco Battisti, Italian Director of the Maputo Living Lab. The organization of the event was supported by Eduardo Ali, the school’s Head for Logistics and by the staff of the Maputo Living Lab themselves.
“A critical aspect in the development of a country – Villafiorita stated – is the building of local skills and competencies. The Summer School contributed to the creation of IT competencies and raised awareness among Mozambican and Italian resources on the country’s issues, proving that everywhere IT is a tool enabling growth and wellbeing. We intend to make this iniaitive grow so that we can reach a greater number of students and create a true network  of scientific and technological collaborations between Italy and Mozambique, targeting motivated and resourceful young people, like the ones with found in Maputo”.
Three students of the “First Summer School of ICT” participated last December to the “RHoK Global” (Random Hacks of Kindness) initiative logging on from Maputo together with hundreds of volunteer programmers and experts from 32 cities and locations around the world. RHoK Global, held at the Trento based Bruno Kessler Foundation, had as its objective the creation of a group of programmers  that would develop applications to tackle problems of social significance, especially emergency management related ones. Some Mozambican newspapers of general circulation, among which"Noticias" and the weekly "Savana", gave prominence to the chool and the participation of the Mozambican youths in the RHoK initiative.
