ABSTRACT
At a time of rapid change and pervasive uncertainty\, the collective memory and the desire to preserve it are acquiring increasing importance\, but we are also seeing more clearly how the term "\;memory"\; is used in different ways in different communities – either by looking at the past or gazing toward the future.
The notion of collective memory\, how it is formed and the social role it plays are central issues for LiveMemories\, which aims to develop tools to make it easier to share these memories and study how new Web technologies are changing the way our memories are shared\, perhaps even the memories themselves. This type of research study can be an enormous benefit and contribute to such disciplines as Sociology\, History and Cognitive Sciences\, in which the concept of memory plays an essential role.
The conference is being organized to spark an interdisciplinary reflection on these ideas. Our idea is to tackle issues such as\:
- How much of our memory is a faithful recording of the past and how much of it is a subsequent construction?
- What is the relationship between individual memory and collective memory?
- What role do technological tools play in building memories?

ABSTRACT
In un periodo di rapidi cambiamenti e diffusa insicurezza\, la memoria collettiva ed il desiderio di preservarla stanno acquistando grande importanza\, ma sta anche diventando sempre più evidente quanto il termine `memoria’ sia usato con accezioni diverse in comunità diverse - guardando al passato\, o guardando al futuro.
La nozione di memoria collettiva\, la sua formazione ed il suo ruolo sociale sono argomenti centrali per LiveMemories\, che si propone di sviluppare strumenti per facilitare la condivisione di tali memorie\, e di studiare come le nuove tecnologie Web stanno cambiando il modo in cui le memorie vengono condivise\, e forse le memorie stesse. Uno studio di questo tipo può beneficiare enormemente del contributo di discipline quali la Sociologia\, la Storia o le Scienze Cognitive\, in cui il concetto di memoria gioca un ruolo fondamentale.
Il convegno si propone come l’inizio di una riflessione interdisciplinare su questi temi. Ci proponiamo di affrontare questioni quali\:
- Quanto della nostra memoria è registrazione fedele dell’avvenuto e quanto è invece costruzione successiva?
- Qual’è la relazione tra memoria individuale e memoria collettiva?
- Che ruolo svolgono gli strumenti tecnologici nella formazione delle memorie?

DARWIN TODAY è un ciclo di conferenze organizzato dal Museo Tridentino di Scienze Naturali di Trento in collaborazione con la Fondazione Bruno Kessler (FBK) - Centro per le Scienze Religiose\, la Fondazione Edmund Mach (FEM) - Centro Ricerca e Innovazione e l'Università di Trento - Centro interdipartimentale di Biologia integrata (CIBIO)\, Centro interdipartimentale Mente/cervello (CIMec) e Dipartimento di filosofia storia e beni culturali (FSBC)\, nell’ambito del Darwin Year 2009\, con relatori di rilievo nazionale ed internazionale che affrontano diversi aspetti legati alla teoria dell’evoluzione\, ai suoi riflessi culturali\, agli avanzamenti scientifici e tecnologici. Gli incontri\, aperti a tutti\, si propongono come momento di conoscenza\, incontro e discussione.
Il prossimo appuntamento si terrà mercoledì 3 giugno\, alle 20.45\, presso l’Aula magna del Museo Tridentino di Scienze Naturali di Trento\, in Via Calepina 14\, e vedrà protagonista Silvio Salvi (Fondazione Edmund Mach – Centro Ricerca e Innovazione)\, che interverrà sul tema L’ORIGINE DELLA MELA\: NUOVI DATI SULLA BASE DELL’ANALISI DEL GENOMA.
Gli studiosi sono divisi sull'origine del melo coltivato. E' un ibrido tra specie di melo selvatiche (ne esistono a decine...)? E di quali? Oppure ha un antenato ben definito? Nuovi dati ottenuti all'interno del progetto di sequenziamento del genoma del melo\, in corso presso FEM-IASMA\, sembrano confermare una delle ipotesi originali\, che localizzava il centro di origine del melo nelle regioni montuose poste fra il Kazakistan e la Cina. Le stesse indagini molecolari stanno chiarendo se e quali altre specie del genere Malus abbiano contribuito\, in epoca preistorica o storica\, alla formazione della specie coltivata. Ancora oggi\, dal punto di vista genetico\, il melo coltivato è una specie in attiva trasformazione grazie al lavoro dei “breeders”\, che apportano continuamente nuovi geni tramite incroci controllati ed eliminano le varianti non adatte alla moderna agricoltura.
Silvio Salvi si è laureato in Biologia presso la Facoltà di Scienze dell’Università di Bologna nel 1992. Ha conseguito il Dottorato in Biotecnologie Cellulari e Molecolari nel 1999. Ha lavorato come visiting scientist presso il John Innes Centre\, UK e presso il Dept of Agronomy e Plant Breeding dell’University of Minnesota\, USA. E’ ricercatore presso la Facoltà di Agraria dell’Università di Bologna. Dal 2007 è ricercatore presso il Centro di Ricerca ed Innovazione della Fondazione E. Mach\, San Michele a/A\, dove si occupa di genetica molecolare in melo ed altre specie frutticole.
La conferenza costituisce una valida opportunità per i docenti\: su richiesta sarà rilasciato un certificato di partecipazione valido ai fini dell’aggiornamento.

DARWIN TODAY is a series of conferences organized by the Museo Tridentino di Scienze Naturali di Trento in association with Fondazione Bruno Kessler (FBK) – Centre for Religious Sciences\, Fondazione Edmund Mach (FEM) – Research and Innovation Centre and the University of Trento - Interdepartmental Centre of Integrated Biology (CIBO)\, Interdepartmental Centre of the Mind/Brain (CIMec) and the Department of History\, Philosophy and Cultural Heritage (FSBC) as part of the Darwin Year 2009\, featuring key note speakers of national and international repute who will address numerous issues related to the theory of evolution\, its cultural repercussions and advancements in science and technology. The meetings\, open to everybody\, are an opportunity for discussion\, exchange and understanding.
The next conference will be held on Wednesday\, June 3 at 8.45 p.m. at the Aula Magna of the Natural Science Museum of Trento\, Via Calepina 14. The event will feature Silvio Salvi (Fondazione Edmund Mach – Centro Ricerca e Innovazione)\, who will hold a speech entitled\: “L’ORIGINE DELLA MELA\: NUOVI DATI SULLA BASE DELL’ANALISI DEL GENOMA.” (ORIGINS OF THE APPLE\: NEW DATA BASED ON GENOME ANALYSIS)
Scholars’ opinions differ regarding the origins of the cultivated apple. Is it a hybrid of (the many) wild apple species? If so\, of which? Or does it have a well-defined ancestor? New data coming from the apple’s genome sequencing project\, in progress at FEM-IASMA\, seem to confirm one of the original theories that placed the apple’s birthplace among the mountainous regions between Kazakhstan and China. Said molecular investigations are also defining whether and which species of the Malus genre have contributed\, in prehistoric or historic times\, in the creation of the cultivated species. Today\, the cultivated apple is genetically speaking a species undergoing active transformation thanks to the work of “breeders” who are continuously adding new genes to it via controlled crossbreeding and are eliminating the variants that are proving unsuitable for modern agriculture.
Silvio Salvi obtained his degree in Biology from the Faculty of Science of the University of Bologna in 1992 and his Doctorate in Cellular and Molecular Biotechnologies in 1999. He has worked as visiting scientist with the John Innes Centre\, UK and with the Dept of Agronomy and Plant Breeding of the University of Minnesota\, USA. He is currently a researcher with the Faculty of Agriculture of the University of Bologna. Since 2007 he has been a researcher of the Research and Innovation Centre of Fondazione E. Mach\, San Michele a/A\, where he studies the molecular genetics of the apple and of other fruit species.
The conference is an advancement opportunity for teachers\: on request\, they will receive a certificate of attendance for refresher purposes.

The aim of the workshop is to present the AURORA project to the local scientific community in order to create opportunities\, to discuss common interests and to establish stable communication channels.
The partners of AURORA project are PAT\, INFN\, FBK-ECT* and the University of Trento. The project\, whose purpose is to develop a high performance computing architecture for applications in basic and applied science and to serve educational purposes in HPC\, will be presented by the research groups who have done preliminary work for it.
In the second part of the workshop some members of the local scientific community will present their (HPC related) research activities.

On the occasion of the exhibition organized by the city of Trento to celebrate the 500th anniversary of the birth of Cardinal Giovanni Morone - former nuncio of the pope to the Holy Roman Emperor Ferdinand I\, bishop of Modena and Novara and\, most importantly\, pontifical legate to the last phase of the Council after being freed from prison where he had been sent by pope Paul IV for a famous heresy trial - a brief conference is being organized to examine the final period of the Council and the role Morone played in it and in Italy’s intricate religious life in the 1560’s.
Indeed\, the period was crucial due to the jumble of expectations about “spiritual” aperture that waited to be satisfied\, to the contrasting personalities of the popes who ruled in the period\, and to the final emergence of the power of the Congregation of the Holy Office of the Inquisition. Those years saw the definition and the stable implementation of the set of orientations of ecclesiastic policies and of the measures for controlling moral\, cultural and religious life in the Italian peninsula\, better known as the Counter-Reformation.
The seminar is organized by the Centre for Italo-German Historical Studies in parallel with the exhibition held at the Diocesan Museum of Trento\, organized by the Municipality of Trento\, called “L'uomo del Concilio. Il Cardinale Giovanni Morone tra Roma e Trento nell'età di Michelangelo” (The Council’s man. Cardinal Giovanni Morone between Rome and Trento in Michelangelo’s era) inaugurated on April 4th and scheduled to close on July 26th

In occasione della mostra organizzata dal comune di Trento per celebrare il cinquecentenario della nascita del cardinale Giovanni Morone\, già nunzio pontificio presso l’imperatore Ferdinando\, vescovo di Modena e di Novara\, e soprattutto legato pontificio nell’ultima fase del Concilio dopo la liberazione dal carcere in cui era stato rinchiuso dal papa Paolo IV per un clamoroso processo per eresia\, si propone un breve convegno che dovrebbe fare il punto sul periodo conclusivo del concilio e sul ruolo del Morone in esso e nell’intricato nodo della vita religiosa italiana degli anni ’60 del Cinquecento.
Si tratta di un momento cruciale per l’intrico di speranze non ancora esaurite di apertura “spirituale”\, per le contrastanti personalità dei pontefici regnanti in quegli anni\, per l’emergere definitivo del potere della Congregazione del Sant’Uffizio dell’Inquisizione. E’ appunto in questi anni che viene a definirsi e a divenire stabilmente operativo quell’insieme di orientamenti di politica ecclesiastica e di misure di controllo sulla vita morale\, religiosa e culturale della penisola italiana che chiamiamo Controriforma.

L’evento si aprirà alle ore 15.00 di lunedì 8 giugno con il benvenuto del Presidente FBK prof. Andrea Zanotti.
Sarà poi il momento della lecture dal titolo “Il potere e il ruolo della scienza” tenuta dal prof. Nicola Cabibbo.
Nicola Cabibbo è uno dei grandi nomi della fisica italiana ed internazionale. Nel passato ha ricoperto ruoli di primo piano come quello di presidente dell'Istituto nazionale di fisica nucleare e dell'Enea\, l'Ente per l'Energia e l'Ambiente\, e dal 1993 è presidente della Pontificia Accademia delle Scienze.
Insegna fisica delle particelle elementari nell'istituto intitolato a Enrico Fermi alla Sapienza di Roma ed è autore di scoperte scientifiche\, quali il cosiddetto "\;angolo di Cabibbo"\;\, un parametro che permette di capire il funzionamento delle interazioni deboli delle particelle elementari\, che lo hanno reso il fisico più citato nelle riviste scientifiche di tutto il mondo.
In programma quindi l’intervento del Presidente CNR prof. Luciano Maiani.
Seguiranno le conclusioni del Presidente della Provincia autonoma di Trento\, Lorenzo Dellai.
Alle ore 16.15 è prevista infine l’inaugurazione dei laboratori congiunti CNR-FBK presso il polo CNR di via alla Cascata\, 56 a Povo e la firma del protocollo d’intesa.

Does a history of sexuality exist? Sexuality is not just a biological factor\, nor is it unchangeable. Like gender\, the way in which a given society defines the distinction between sexes\, sexuality too has its own history. A look at the voluminous documentation from the Italian Renaissance\, ranging from archives to literature\, opens our minds to a fascinating and revealing\, and sometimes tormented\, panoramic view of a world in which gender\, sexuality and sexual identity obeyed orders at times quite different from those that govern our present era.
The seminar is the first of a cycle of meetings on the implications\, uses and limitations of the “gender” category in multiple disciplinary fields of human and applied sciences.
Guido Ruggiero is a professor of the Department of History of the University of Miami and fellow of Villa I Tatti (The Harvard University Centre for Italian Renaissance Studies). Among his works\: Violence in Early Renaissance Venice (1980)\; I confini dell’eros\: crimini sessuali e sessualità nella Venezia del Rinascimento (1988\, or. pub. 1985)\; Binding Passions\: Tales of Magic\, Marriage and Power at the End of the Renaissance (1993)\; Machiavelli in Love. Esiste una storia della sessualità? Non si tratta soltanto di un fatto biologico\, né immutabile. Come il genere\, il modo attraverso il quale una determinata società definisce le distinzioni fra i sessi\, anch’essa ha la sua storia. Uno sguardo sulla ricca documentazione del Rinascimento italiano\, dagli archivi alla letteratura\, apre a panoramiche affascinanti e rivelatrici\, anche nella loro difficoltà\, di un mondo in cui il genere\, la sessualità e l’identità sessuale obbedivano a istanze talvolta molto distanti da quelle che governano il nostro presente.
Il seminario è il primo di un ciclo di incontri sulle implicazioni\, gli usi e i limiti della categoria del “genere” in molteplici ambiti disciplinari\, dalle scienze umane alle scienze applicate.

SEMINARIO TECNICO
Il Laser Scanner 3D si sta affermando sempre più come metodo insostituibile per il rilievo di oggetti complessi\, in modo particolare nell’ambito dei beni culturali e ambientali. L’elevata densità dei punti campionati consente di eseguire il rilievo geometrico degli oggetti con un ragguardevole livello di dettaglio e completezza. Dall'iniziale rapida evoluzione della strumentazione per il rilievo tridimensionale\, si osserva ora una marcata attenzione anche allo sviluppo\, miglioramento e affinamento delle tecniche software di trattamento del dato tridimensionale.
Il seminario applicativo\, rivolto agli ingegneri\, agli architetti\, ai geometri ai professionisti in genere\, si propone di fornire la conoscenza e l'aggiornamento sullo stato dell'arte delle tecnologie di rilevamento e di trattamento dati da Laser Scanner3D. Il seminario sarà inoltre l'occasione di vedere in azione strumenti Laser Scanner e
parallelamente osservare le nuove tecnologie software di trattamento dei dati 3D.

TECHNICAL SEMINAR
The 3D Laser Scanner is quickly confirming its status as the insurmountable method for the measurement of complex objects\, especially when it comes to cultural and environmental assets. The high density of sample points allows to obtain the geometric imaging of objects with highly satisfactory levels of detail and completeness. Following in the wake of the initial and very quick evolution of the equipment for 3D imaging\, today the sector is focusing also on the development\, improvement and refining of 3D data processing software techniques.
The application seminar\, intended for engineers\, architects\, land surveyors and sector professionals in general\, will provide the knowledge and the state of the art of 3D laser scanning measurement technologies and data processing. It will also provide the chance for viewing a Laser Scanner in operation and for observing the new software technologies now available for processing 3D data.

The biennial conference series User Modeling (UM\, 1986-2007) and Adaptive Hypermedia and Adaptive Web-Based Systems (AH\, 2000-2008) have been merged into the annual conference series User Modeling\, Adaptation\, and Personalization (UMAP). UMAP is the most important conference for those interested in any aspect of (interaction with) systems that acquire information about a user (or group of users) so as to be able to adapt their behavior to that user or group.
UMAP 2009 is being organized in Trento in collaboration with User Modeling Inc. and Fondazione Bruno Kessler.

UMAP 2009 è organizzata a Trento in collaborazione con User Modeling Inc. e Fondazione Bruno Kessler.
UMAP è la più importante conferenza internazionale che si occupa della ricerca e sviluppo dei sistemi informatici in grado di acquisire autonomamente informazioni sull'utente e adattare il loro comportamento di conseguenza. Questa conferenza è il risultato dell'unione di due linee di ricerca e sviluppo tradizionalmente tenute distinte ma nei fatti molto vicine\: quella relativa alle tecniche di modellazione automatica di utenti\, che faceva riferimento alla conferenza User Modelling (1986-2007)\, e quella sui sistemi adattivi\, in particolare basati sul web\, Adaptive Hypermedia (2000-2008).
